In commemoration of the Disaster Risk Reduction Month 2020 as well as the Global Handwashing Day which both fell in October, LeaN On by INVEST DM organized an inclusive handwashing campaign named “Bersih Untuk Semua”. Launched on the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB)’s social media accounts from 6 to 22 October 2020, the campaign that took the form of photo and video challenges aimed to encourage the public, especially people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, to be involved in promoting the importance of washing hands (or other body parts that function as hands) with soap and running water to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Through the video challenge, participants were invited to demonstrate handwashing activities that are proper, adaptive; beyond the limitations, and entertaining. Meanwhile, the photo challenge focused on encouraging the public to be creative in providing simple and affordable handwashing facilities that are also accessible to everyone, including vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, children, and the elderly.

This short campaign was exposed to at least 88 thousand social media users and received a total of 22 video and 10 photo submissions from the participants. The initial selection stage listed 12 finalists under three video challenge categories and eight finalists for the creative handwashing facilities photo challenge. The jury consisted of representatives from the Directorate of Disaster Management Strategy Development (PSPB) BNPB, Communication Division of BNPB, USAID Indonesia and The Asia Foundation held a virtual judging meeting on October 26, 2020. The judging was witnessed by the Director of PSPB BNPB, Deputy Director of Democratic Resilience and Governance USAID Indonesia, Chief of Party of INVEST DM, as well as the representatives of MAJu and the COVID-19 Task Force — Behaviour Change Department.

The jury selected nine winners of the competition, including Yemima Mikhaela as the winner for the Most Proper Handwashing Activity video as well as the judges’ favorite, Ninik Heca for Beyond the Limit Handwashing Activity, and Ruth Kesia for Most Entertaining Handwashing Activity. Meanwhile, the winner and judges’ favorite for the handwashing facility photo challenge was secured by Luluk Ariyantiny. Each winner received prizes in the form of cellular phone credit and electronic shopping vouchers worth 200 thousand to 400 thousand rupiahs according to their ranks.

The judges and witnesses closed the meeting by appreciating the time taken by the participants and the creativity they demonstrated through the submissions to promote proper handwashing activities among their respective social networks so that all can participate in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
